Its out !! It really is out, the newest Firmware update for Nokia 5800. And its not just a bug fix either. It include many welcoming features to make your 5800XM a better experience. So we’ll look at the feature list
Change Log for Firmware v40:
o Kinetic scrolling
o Home style widget with Nokia 5530
o Touch is more responsive
o Slide to Unlock during call
o Improved stability
o Auto activation of Full QWERTY keyboard in Landscape, Alpha Numeric in Portrait modes
o New contact & music widget
o Home Screen similar to that of Nokia 5530
o Real Player Updated
o Some improvement in camera quality (could not verified by my self)
o Newer Icons “Sharing Online”, “Configuring Accessories”, “Configure Phone”
o Improved application “Updating Applications”, which also renames Upgrade SW
o The application “Data transfer” was also implemented in “Settings”
o Kinetic Scrolling is not available in main menu, application menu, browser.
o Removed the alphanumeric keypad in landscape version, now when we turned the phone alphanumeric portrait changes to full qwerty
o New screen alarm, but only when the screen is locked
o New screen incoming call, also only when the screen is locked
o Ovi Contacts installed
o In the settings menu there is a new icon for ‘Phone Switch’
As you see there are many visible changes in this update. Another thing to note by is Nokia has speed up the clock speed of 5800xm from 369Mhz to 434Mhz in their earlier firmware update ( v20). With this update it feels they have some how made it a bit more fast. Also it feels more responsive to touch with this update.
Responsiveness of 5800XM’s screen was a criticizing area for long time. But now it feels they have refined it. With Kinetic Scrolling enabled its more enjoyable. Kinetic scroll is working everywhere except in Main Menu, Application Menu and browser. But its not much of a problem since it works in all other places and as for the browser you can always use Operamini 5 which is free and IMHO better than the original browser.
There is also the new home screen similar to Nokia 5530’s one. It combines quick contacts, app shortcuts and Emails. Widgets are also there for apps like Music player and contacts. Real player and few other built in apps are also updated.
There are other nice touches such as the new ‘Incomin Call’ screen, where you have unique sliders to Answer and Unlock the phone. Also when you are holding the phone up right you will have the ‘Alpha Numeric’ key pad, similar to a usual phone keypad. But when you rotate it to side ways position (Landscape mode) it automatically changes into full QWERTY keypad. That also is a positive step I think taken considering the user response.
So in conclusion its evident Nokia has reviewed user requests and feedback and acted upon them. As the first mass market Nokia Touch phone, 5800XM was a huge success and a challenge. Its really great to see Nokia kept their promises, and taking care of their users. I think this update really gives a new life to the 5800XM. Great job Nokia!
