This is my review of the Amazon item: Micro USB OTG to USB 2.0 Adapter, 4 Pack

For some reason Amazon keeps rejecting this review on the product page saying review is not inline with their guidelines, but i can't see why. But posting here in case someone searches for it and finds this...
I thought of doing this fairly extensive performance review because while
I was trying to figure which one to buy, there was some lack of performance comparisons. I've got the 4-pack offered as a Prime Add-on item here (for $4.99) for a very similar price as the normal shipping single pack. I'd say it's well worth the price.
For one you get 4! (It says 3 units in the small print in the middle of the item description page, but the main title is correct as my pack had 4).
About the performance, I just checked one unit extensively. One thing I was worried was the speed because some people had complaint it’s very slow. In my speed tests it shows it works almost the full range of the USB 2.0 speed.
I used the free tool 'USB Flash Benchmark'
1. First I checked with an old USB 2.0 Sandisk Cruzer Edge 4Gb thumb drive using this micro USB adapter on a Windows 8.1 tablet, Toshiba Encore 2 Write WT10PE.
Max Read: 21 MB/s
Max Write: 10 MB/s
For small files it goes down significantly as with many devices.
2. For reference on max speeds achievable on this Sandisk thumb-drive, I checked the same thumb-drive on my USB 3.0 enabled laptop Lenovo Y40:
Max Read: 23 MB/s
Max Write: 10 MB/s
For small files it goes down significantly as with many devices.
So in conclusion, Micro USB adapter listed here doesn't really affect the performance of the thumb-drive.
3. More amazing (I didn't think it’ll be possible) thing was the listed Micro-USB adapter can be used to directly connect an external hard disk. Because many Micro-USB ports need extra power to run an external HDD. Well I think it’s more about the ability of the Toshiba tablet itself than the micro-USB adapter, because tablet is a full Windows tablet with internal hardware of a full USB configuration even though the port is only a micro-USB one due to the thickness limitation of the device.
(Windows device manager says it has a USB 3.0 controller, but for some reason Toshiba has gone with just one micro-USB 2.0 port)
Anyway for this test a Transcend Storejet USB 3.0 1Tb external HDD is used with this micro-USB adapter (without any external power), on the Toshiba Tablet with USB 2.0:
Max Read: 33.5 MB/s
Max Write: 33.5 MB/s
Again for small files it goes down somewhat (1K at 4.2 MB/s).
4. Same external hard disk directly on the Lenovo Y40 laptop (so it’s going to work on USB 3.0 mode): (Image 4)
Max Read: 101 MB/s (up to 145 MB/s in certain ranges)
Max Write: 101 MB/s (up to 108 MB/s in certain ranges)
Again for small files it goes down somewhat (1K at 6.5 MB/s).
So in conclusion, adapter is capable of running at the full range of USB 2.0 in devices that supports.
I used the adapter to connect Logitech mouse to the tablet as well. So all that works. It looks okay made, I just got it so not sure about the reliability.
Maybe I’ll update the review with changes/performance over time. Some people has mentioned there’s good lot of units and bad lots. So cannot be certain about all units on sale at Amazon, but the once I got seems to work well. Only thing i need is the ability to use multiple USB devices (external HDD + a mouse may be) since this Toshiba tablet only has 1 micro-USB port, for that I'll need to buy a multi-port USB adapter. But that's not a limit of this item.
Hope this review helps you.
